Do many students do this?

Feel a little surprised today. Have been browsing the web looking for guidance on the techniques of Compare and Contrast as regards writing an essay and there are so many sites where you can pay to download someone else's essay and pass it off as your own. What a shame that this goes on or am I just a little innocent person lost in the field of academia. Maybe everyone does this and I'm one of the few left trying to write my own essays.

Not many students do it. A lot of students probably attempt to at least do it, but now teachers have caught up, and if they have suspicions that a student copied the work, they can easily enter part of the text, do a search and find where the student copied the essay from. I think it's pathetic and pointless, but desperate students go for desperate solutions.

I guess so but it's such a shame. Maybe 20 years ago I might have thought differently - who knows?

Nice to hear from you though.

I have heard quite a few radio programmes discussing this over the last couple of years. Business in selling ready written essays as well. Students willing to pay quite alot of money. I suppose information is so easily available now over the internet, but as you say, hopefully it can be tracked down easily too.

The only ones that benefit are the sellers; it's a shame their business model relies on people's dishonesty.

I taught 4 quarters of English Composition. I told my students if they are ever in the market for an essay, they might as well pay the big bucks and buy a degree from a diploma mill.

Hello Penny and Carrie, this was all news to me until I saw all the web sites. That's what comes of trying to follow the news on our French tv - it must all go over my head (unless it's not a problem in France)
